The problem
A fluent technical description states a seismic zone that does not match the official zoning map, a material that is not in the design, or a code article that does not exist. The text enters the permit file and the signature goes on it.

A process from your work
How long does a structural check and its report take you?
- Step 1From the designer's data, the tool runs the analysis and drafts the technical report.
- Step 2You compare the static scheme and the key values with the drawings, and recalculate one check value by hand.
- Step 3The signature on the report stays with the engineer.
- Where the tool goes wrongThe draft calculates the cantilever balcony as a slab on two supports, without the fixed end.
- The verification stepCompare the static scheme with the drawing; recalculate by hand the moment at the fixed end.
More: what was measured and the full check
What changed, as measured
Working the way they usually do, the engineers took 132 minutes on average for the task; the AI agent system completed it in about two minutes, before any review by an engineer.
Who was measured: Experienced structural engineers doing one standardised design task in their usual way, compared with an AI agent system on the same task.
The caveat: A working paper by the system's own developers, on one task; the two minutes are the machine's run time and do not include the engineer's review and sign-off.
The check, step by step
- Before reading the results, find in the report the static scheme of every element (supports, fixed ends, overhangs) and compare it with the structural drawing.
- Check where the report places the moment that governs the design: in a cantilever it is at the fixed end, not at midspan.
- Using the scheme from the drawing, work out one check value by hand (the reaction or the moment at the fixed end) and compare it with the report's figure.
- Whenever the tool rewrites the text after comments, re-check the whole scheme, not only the changed paragraph, and do not sign until every figure of the model matches the drawings.
In the course you prepare and check technical reports, engineering calculations and technical documentation with AI.

A documented failure pattern
A cantilever balcony, calculated as a slab on two supports
A paragraph of the structural technical report, drafted by an AI tool from the designer's data for the engineer who will sign it for the building permit file.
Source: arXiv, 2025, and 2 more.
Why it is easy to miss
The sentence "within the capacity" answers the question for a different structure, and it is what the engineer signs. The balcony has one fixed end and a free edge, while the draft gives it two supports: in a cantilever the moment that governs the design is at the fixed end, exactly where the draft's scheme has no fixity, and the draft looks for the maximum at midspan. A quick read finds nothing, because the draft keeps everything that catches the eye (the element, the material and the 1.50 m dimension) and the check that follows is internally consistent.
Where the failure pattern is documented: A CROSS-UK confidential safety report on AI in structural design (July 2026, reported by Digital Construction Plus in September 2026); a study of ChatGPT in statics analysis (arXiv, February 2025).Sources: arXiv, 2025; Digital Construction Plus, 2026; StructurePoint, 2021.The case above is ours, written for work in Albania; the laws it names were checked against the official text.
What it looks like
The designer's dataThird-floor balcony: reinforced concrete cantilever slab, fixed into the facade beam, projecting 1.50 m.
The AI tool's draftThe balcony slab, with a span of 1.50 m, has been modelled as a slab simply supported at both ends. The maximum moment at midspan is within the capacity of the section.

What you leave with
The findings table follows the three layers of verification: each fact against the project data, each rule against the technical design conditions and the building code, each value against the calculations, with the second check recorded. It comes before the signature and lets an inspector reopen the same official sources.
